We are grey jays, a small jewelry and home-wares business based out of the Pacific Northwest. Our aesthetic draws from the collision of the natural and man-made and features objects we have found. Because we are not constrained to one process or medium, each piece we make is one-of-a-kind.
grey jays was started as an outlet for two friends who shared a mutual love for nature, knickknacks, reuse and jewelry. We have always been influenced by the beauty that surrounds us. Our craft came into being while we were working a seasonal job in Washington State's San Juan Islands. Our free time there was spent scouring the beaches for driftwood and sea glass and searching for inspiration by kayak on the Salish Sea. After the island life, we eventually submitted to becoming city dwellers. From visiting local upholstery shops for leather scraps to scouring alleyways for small metal objects, we began repurposing what some may call junk.
We believe what sets grey jays apart is our creative process. However, we cannot take all of the credit - Mother Nature and often the hands of others contribute to our work. We hope to challenge people to look at these commonplace, natural, and man-made objects beyond their existing or former purpose, and ultimately find little ways to incorporate reuse into their own lives.
grey jays has changed over the years; from a hobby for two friends to stay connected through their art when quite a few miles and a couple of states separated them, to both going off to follow their dreams. I, Lindsey, have followed my dream of taking grey jays to its fullest while Callie has gone to follow hers in New Mexico (still contributing her beautiful creations when she can). It has been a difficult transition for us both, this is what grey jays is all about: to learn, grow and repurpose all while staying connected through this beautiful little thing we created together.
